Google Business Profile and Google Maps Advertising FAQ

This guide provides short, precise answers to the most common questions business owners have about Google Maps - how to register without getting suspended, what affects your chances of appearing in the top 3 (Local Pack), why customer reviews disappear, and how organic profile promotion differs from paid advertising through Google Ads.

Google Business Profile policies are updated every few months. Practices that worked two years ago (such as adding keywords to your business name or verifying your profile using a code sent by postcard) can now result in an immediate profile suspension.

We have grouped the most frequently asked questions from business owners and marketers into 5 topic-based sections so you can quickly find a solution to your problem.

Registration, Verification, and Listing Policies

How much does it cost to list a business on Google Maps?

Creating, verifying, and managing a Google Business Profile is 100% free. Google does not charge a subscription fee for publishing price lists, product catalogs, photos, or buttons linking to your website. You only need to pay if you decide to launch paid advertising through Google Ads.

Can I add my business to Google Maps if I don't have an office (service-area or online business only)?

It depends on how you interact with customers:

  • Online-only businesses (marketplaces, online schools, IT services without a specific local presence) - listings are prohibited under Google's policies.

  • Service-area businesses (plumbers, cleaning services, in-home appliance repair, courier delivery) - you can and should create a listing. During setup, hide your physical address using the appropriate toggle and specify the cities or districts you serve in the "Service Area" section.

Why does Google require video verification instead of an SMS code?

Video verification has become Google's standard security measure for combating fake business listings. The algorithm needs to confirm that your business actually exists at the specified address, that you have signage and equipment, and that you have physical access to the premises (for example, by unlocking the door with a key).

Profile Promotion and Getting into the Top 3 (Local Pack)

What criteria does Google use to select the 3 businesses shown at the top of the search results?

The algorithm relies on a formula involving three variables:

  1. Distance - how close your business is to the user's current smartphone location or to the area specified in their search query.
  2. Relevance - how closely your primary category, list of services, product catalog, and review content match the search query.
  3. Prominence - your overall rating, the number and recency of reviews, your website's quality, and brand mentions on external resources (directories, media outlets, and social networks).

Does adding keywords and the city name to your business name give you an advantage?

Technically, keywords in the business name field can significantly affect rankings. However, if those words do not appear on your actual physical business signage and in your official registration documents, adding them directly violates Google's policies. A single competitor complaint submitted through the Business Redressal Complaint Form may be enough to force a name change or get your profile suspended.

Do regular posts (Google Updates) help improve search rankings?

Posts alone will not move your listing from position 20 to position 1, but they can significantly increase user engagement. People click on current offers, follow buttons, and spend more time interacting with your profile. This signals to the search engine that your business is relevant and in demand.

Reviews, Ratings, and Removing Negative Feedback

A real customer left a review in front of us, but it hasn't appeared on Google Maps. Why?

Google's anti-spam system may block reviews in the following situations:

  • The customer connected to the guest Wi-Fi at your clinic or café and submitted the review using the same IP address associated with managing your business profile.
  • The customer's account is brand new and has no history of location activity or previous reviews.
  • The review contains a link, phone number, or email address.
  • You asked 15–20 customers to leave reviews on the same day, triggering Google's protection against unusual spikes in review activity.

Pro tip - Ask customers to turn off Wi-Fi and submit their reviews over mobile data 2–3 hours after their visit. Encourage them to attach 1–2 genuine photos taken inside your establishment. Such reviews are more likely to pass moderation and may remain near the top of the review feed for a long time.

How can I remove a defamatory review or a fake one-star review?

Business owners do not have a button to delete someone else's review. You can click the three dots next to the review, select Report review, and choose the reason for the violation (spam, conflict of interest, offensive content, or off-topic content). If Google's automated review rejects your report, submit an appeal through the Reviews Management Tool in the Google Help Center and attach supporting evidence.

Paid Advertising on Google Maps

Many people confuse free business profile management (local SEO) with paid promotion in Google Maps search results. Let's compare the two approaches -

ParameterOrganic Promotion (Local SEO)Paid Advertising (Google Ads on Maps)
Cost of clicks and calls 0 ₽ (completely free) Pay per click (CPC) or per targeted action through an auction
Time to reach the top From 3–4 weeks to several months As soon as the campaign passes review (1–2 days)
How it appears in search results The standard top-3 block and a red or colored map pin The topmost listing marked "Sponsored" + a square branded pin
What happens when the budget runs out The listing can continue generating leads for years Additional ad impressions stop immediately

How do I enable paid priority placement on Google Maps?

Google Business Profile does not have a separate "Priority Placement" wallet or feature. Advertising is configured through the professional Google Ads account:

  1. Link your Google Maps business profile to your Google Ads account (under "Linked accounts").
  2. Add Location Assets to your search campaigns or launch a campaign optimized for offline store visits and goals (Performance Max for store goals).

Suspensions and Technical Issues

My profile has been suspended - what does this mean, and how can I restore my listing?

There are two types of suspension -

  • Soft suspension - your listing remains visible to users on Google Maps, including its reviews, but you lose the ability to edit its information.
  • Hard suspension - your listing disappears completely from Google Maps and search results, along with all its reviews.

How to get your profile reinstated - never create a new listing to replace a suspended one! First, fix the policy violation in your profile (remove spam from the business name, hide the address if you do not have physical signage), gather a set of official documents (business registration certificate or extract, lease agreement, utility bill showing the address, and photos of your signage), and submit an official appeal through the Business Profile Appeals Tool. Important - you generally have one primary opportunity to submit your evidence, so include all supporting documents from the start.
